King George Whiting (Sillaginidae) with goatfish Baird Bay SA 22-02-2009
Silago punctatus [K G Whiting*]
[*Spotted Whiting is unarguably a better common species name for the two main interest groups:
#1:those pro-an Oz republic and
#2:those who prefer sensible descriptive common names for fish i.e. names more relevant to appearance than a long ago deceased Royal’s palate…after all, real people with real awareness and a real appreciation for science are already well aware that this very tasty fish’s days are numbered wrt wild catch quotas; local and seasonal closures loom for both recreational and commercial fishers( I’m not a pollie, at least where this pin board’s concerned!….but I’m a realist, I reckon…)
Future market supply of Silago punctate fillets will soon depend on aquaculture, with wild catch quotas gradually fading to near nil, and possibly as catch and release regardless of size or season.
