David Muirhead I've seen more of these very small juvenile blue devil fish in Gulf Saint Vincent in the past two years than at any other time in my life which suggests the species has recently had one or more exceptional breeding season successes.Which might be related to warmer inshore water, but that is purely speculation on my part.

David Muirhead Taken in clean tea colored fresh water of the quite briskly out flowing Western River (really just a stream in world context but South Australia being the driest State of the driest inhabited continent we have to get by!),knee deep water and while intentionally submerging myself and my gear as a preliminary rinse following a scuba dive in the small cove right where the river meets the waves(Western River Cove)
David Muirhead Bream are a common estuary species around the southern half of Australia and are a popular recreational fishing target species.I saw many dozens of all sizes from small juveniles to adults in the 1-200 meters or so of the river that you must walk alongside or in to reach the beach from the car park.Plus a few yellow eye mullet, another popular target species common in our estuaries and inshore waters.

David Muirhead This is a male, the females are green or variations of but with green the base color.
David Muirhead It is parked at the station of several western cleaner clingfish but neither station nor cleaners are visible in the image. They are clearly seen in several other photos I took of this fish at this site on same dive, however.

The dark reddish brown animal occupying the ‘tubeworm-like’ ostium(centre right) is in fact a gastropod mollusc,Serpulorbis sipho. This loosely coiled tubular shell is a common littoral zone species which is endemic to southern Oz.(Fact:95+% of ALL molluscs found in southern Oz are endemic to the region). This shells’ basal coils are very firmly cemented to rocks, pinna shells, and other hard surfaces, singly or in clumps. They are suspension feeders, extruding a net of mucous threads.

Sponge crab, Pelican Lagoon KI 27-04-2013 DSMci_6160_9714ci
Pelican Lagoon is a unique dive site, suited to both shore and boat dives(and ideal for safe shallow drift dives on incoming tides),and has some beaut sponge gardens(mostly these are at 3 to7m depth)which shelter a huge array of mainly smaller marine lifeforms, especially invertebrates. The lagoons extensive seagrass beds are also a pipefish hotspot, eg for Verco’s PF.
