Seastar (‘biscuit star’_Tosia australis )in SA (old scan)
Update info:I’m sure this shot was from Kingscote on Kangaroo Island. The slide image was taken w my long-retired old Nikon F2 w 55mm macro lens in Ikelite housing.(Exact location for the record was about 15m west of town’s public jetty but not actually under the jetty proper and depth was about 3-4 m).
Recently I’ve learned that the Tosia family is currently undergoing major revision by Echinoderm taxonomists, with one result being that ‘Tosia australis’,formerly considered as a single if highly variable species,is now recognised as comprising a ‘species complex’ with at least two separate species and possibly more.

davem Taxonomists are grossly undervalued by our society generally and by our science funders on both sides of politics
davem (in my humble opinion, speaking as a seasoned amateur who admires taxonomists and regularly bemoans their rarity as a species
davem ....(further re taxonomists;by species I should have indicated I was misusing our language,ie 'H.sapiens, subspecies or variety thereof' is what I meant!)

Seastar Petricia vernicina in SA waters (old scan)
This very common SA seatar has considerable variability in colouration(but base colour always falls somewhere within the red spectrum, from pale pinkish-grey to rich orange and even almost full red)and some modest variability wrt presence or virtual absence of dorsal patternings/markings,which if present are usually fairly indistinct or subtle.
