Southern Sand Star (Luidia australis) in GSV SA (old scan) dsm i31118.
This large echinoderm is common but being a nocturnally active predator is rarely seen by day.Picture taken on night dive off Glenelg metro Adelaide circa 2000-ish or earlier. When encountered @ night they are usually moving with surprising rapidity over the sandy substrate.Occnly a fish such as a moonlighter or leatherjacket will investigate, approaching to within centimetres, but I’ve never seen this seastar species being attacked, and the armour-plated dorsum (which on close inspection rather fancifully resembles a knight’s chain-mail or the scales of a reptile)may of course be an effective defence!
